AFTER DREAMING (2025) by Christine Haroutounian
Road Movie Drama 105' AM MX US Armenian Language

Festivals Busan IFF 25, Golden Apricot FF 25, Jerusalem FF 25 WP - Forum Berlinale 2025

A soldier is asked to take a girl on a road trip to keep her father’s death a secret from her.

In a land after war, yet before peace, an itinerant well-digger is mistaken for an enemy and killed by villagers. Wanting to withhold the news from their daughter Claudette, the victim’s family requests a haggard soldier named Atom to take Claudette away on a road trip until the funeral is over. On the road, as Atom and Claudette find themselves increasingly drawn to each other’s mysteries, their journey turns into an intimate drift through the scarred spaces of a war-torn country.

"In her self-assured first feature, Christine Haroutounian transforms a seemingly simple road trip into a complex odyssey across the Armenian landscape."

"Christine Haroutounian wields a disembodied lens in her enticing feature debut."

Siddhant Adlaka - Variety

"a unique, dreamlike experience that is both visually and sonically striking."

"A truly great and hypnotic debut from Christine Haroutounian."

Finn Drewes - Finn Cinema Blog

"An arresting feature debut"

"Haroutounian hypnotically captures a portrait of a people and nation in a state of purgatory, all amplified by a camera perspective that feels like that of a living ghost."

"exhilarating to witness"

Marshall Shafer - Crooked Marquee

"After Dreaming offers something rare: the chance to live inside an unfamiliar memory, to experience cinema as an act of cultural archaeology, to glimpse, however fleetingly, the spectral echoes of history in the present."

Kai Swanson - Movie Web

"Christine Haroutounian's After Dreaming excelled as a true interrogation of narrative form, showing how the aesthetic experimentation typical of a Forum film could be seen in a deceptively more conventional piece filmmaking."

David Katz - Fipresci

"One of the "knock outs" of the Berlin Film Festival 2025"

"the Armenian-American filmmaker has made the most transfixing first feature I've seen in an age"

"[A] stunning debut"

Sam Wigley - British Film Institute
